| Late report posted 02/17/01: Word came about an accident at South Padre Island, Texas on or about 01/15/01 — new Schliterbahn Water Park project — operator failed to use outriggers. Rumor: Doyle, I spoke to rental outfit that owned the 40 ton link-belt, almost new crane. Seems the operator was experimenting, poked his boom out to see how far it would go before tipping without using the outriggers, it went down on tip. No injuries, except to poor ole boom point. He still has his job. |
The crane was a 75 ton Liebherr, working at an oil rig site. While moving the crane on mats, with full counterweights, the crane was swung over the side (no load?) and the crane fell over backwards onto its side. The operator had one section of boom out and there was no load on the crane. The counterweights fell off the crane as it went over.

A crane operator was injured Thursday night when his crane toppled into a ditch. The identity of the 38 year-old man, was not released. He was driving the crane on SW 149 and U.S. Highway 62 when its right wheels left the roadway, authorities said. The crane toppled over a guardrail and into a ditch. The driver was trapped in the cab, which was half-submerged in water, said Laura O'Leary, an Emergency Medical Services Authority spokeswoman. The crane operator called 911. He complained of head, neck and shoulder pain when emergency medical crews arrived, she said. The man was taken to a local hospital without life-threatening injuries. |
