10/24/00:
Lafayette, Ohio — A Fort Wayne man was killed Saturday morning when a crane boom fell on him as he attempted to knock a pin out of it, an Allen County sheriff's department sergeant said.
The 37 year old man was working with a partner about noon at 3340 Swaney Road near Lafayette when the accident occurred, said Sgt. Scott Nolan. Officials are withholding the man's name pending notification of relatives.
The man and another employee of Martin Crane Service of Fort Wayne were removing the boom from the crane Nolan said.
When the pin was knocked out,the boom, estimated to weigh in excess of 2,000 pounds, struck the man and fell across his shoulders, pinning him to the ground.
Co-workers were able to remove the boom with a forklift, and performed first aid until the arrival of Lafayette emergency personnel, Nolan said.
He was taken to Lima Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 1:21 P.M.

10/18/00: Falling drywall showers pedestrians
| Dead Link | | Cache Copy below |
The accident occurred when trying to load drywall onto the 47th floor of a new highrise in Vancouver BC and the leading edge caught on the building resulting in the load becoming unbalanced and dropping out of the basket rigging. The crane
operator was operating in the blind and relied on the riggers to give clear and adequate instructions for the lift. No tag lines were used and the load apparently swung out of the intended position as it was being hoisted. The load consisted of 40 sheets of drywall stacked in two skids. |
10/11/00: North Queensland, Australia — Another crane related death in Australia.
It happened yesterday morning at a Thiess construction site at the Lavarack Army Barracks in Townsville, North Queensland.
The deceased (Nick Nicholas) was an employee of a local rigging subcontractor, S&M Rigging, who is responsible for erecting
precast concrete panels forming the structural elements of the new accommodation units. He was located in the man-box of a "cherry picker" when four previously erected and propped up panels collapsed, falling against the machine
and causing his death. No other persons were injured.
A full investigation into the incident is now underway.
