Enhanced Reports — August 2000
8/25/00: California — One man was killed this morning in Monrovia in a mining operation when the boom of a Grove RT 58 fell and struck the
victim.
The victim was working with a load that was being lifted when the pin holding the boom sheared. The pick was made at a radius of about 26 or 27 feet. The rear outrigger did not seem to be fully extended as the rear tires were still on the ground. The maximum load at that radius was 3600(?) plus or minus.
They were most likely in the structural portion of the load chart. The load was an unknown load. When the pick was made, the pin sheared. The employees guiding the load ran and tried to jump off the platform where the load was sitting. Unfortunately, there was no place to run or jump.

8/25/00: Terex boom crater
This accident occurred at Great Lakes Steel, on Zug Island,
Michigan. This photo is of an almost new 35 ton Terex (under 500 hrs.). The operator was furnished with an incorrect weight on the pick.
The lift was over the capacity for the jib, yet the
boom failed before the jib.

| 8/22/00: Houston, Texas — The new stadium for the new football team is just going up. It is right next door to the Astro Dome. There are 3 Liebherr tower cranes on the sight and four crawlers. During a very bad thunder storm this morning the tallest of the three tower cranes got hit by a bolt of lightning. The operator kicked the front glass open and from the cab came bellowing smoke. That is all we have at this time. Hopefully, we'll have more later. |

A trailer carrying a crane owned by Maxim Crane Works (Anthony Crane) became stuck under an overpass Tuesday. The tractor-trailer rig is also owned and operated by Maxim.
Another Maxim/Anthony incident happened in the San Diego area back in May. See story and photos. |
8/10/00: Phoenix, Arizona — The crane was on bare rental.
The company running it was moving it around the job-site when the swing lock let the crane swing to the side.
The operator actually jumped out of the lower and into the upper to try to save it. He ended up riding it out in the upper cab.
