Update from a reliable source: The crane was being used to off-load concrete panels from a truck. The operator accidently bumped the hoisting control lever and knocked it out of the hoisting mode. He didn't have his foot on the brake and the load fell and killed a worker. |
4/13/2000: CHICAGO — Wednesday, April 12th a Link-Belt 218H setting precast panels with 90' of boom tipped, no injuries or damage to crane. It appears that the piece was out of the chart, and came to rest on the fire escape of the building behind the job, this was the only thing that saved the crane and prevented any injuries.
The accident happened at 1230 West Jackson, knocking out power for several blocks. The crane toppled over onto a building, knocking down some ComEd wires, which in turn caused a power outage from Adams Street to Jackson Boulevard and from Loomis to Racine.

4/13/00: Fort Myers, Florida — There was a crane accident on a project that Black & Veatch is doing for Florida Power & Light Company yesterday.
Update from a reliable source: this was a two-block incident that pulled the jib over. There was paint left inside the hoist drum after a recent painting of the drawworks and the paint caused the frictions to malfunction. The operator was not able to disengage the hoisting fast enough to avoid two-blocking the ball into the jib. |
