SLIDELL - Although a Slidell man has a great chance of losing his leg after an accident while on the job at Halter Marine, 330 Bayou Liberty Rd., emergency workers on the scene praised his courage throughout the entire rescue effort.

9/29/99: Crane Related Death at New School in Rockport, Maine | Dead Link |

An accident at the site of a new school has claimed the life of a construction worker when a crane that was lifting a metal truss tipped over. The truss struck and killed one of the workers on the ground.

10/01/99 Followup:

Preliminary findings show that the ground may have settled on one side underneath a crane that toppled earlier this week, killing a worker in Rockport.

Occupational Safety and Health Administration official Edward Wells says early reports show the truss may have hit the ground and Nelson and made the crane tip over.

Nelson was an engineering technician for W.W. Cole and was at the job site to test concrete. A specialist is at the site today to inspect the crane.
Workers are expected to return to the site Monday. The OSHA investigation is continuing.

Threasa Huether, a 19 year old woman, died Tuesday morning while she was moving a trailer with an overhead crane. She was crushed between two other trailers.

A construction accident on a television tower Wednesday morning forced the evacuation of a nursing home and 200 houses and sent several television and radio stations scrambling to find ways to transmit programming.

A bolt holding a crane to the top of a 900-foot broadcasting tower snapped while workers installed a digital television converter, according Fire Department Battalion Chief Hector Torres.

9/3/99: Three men died when the 40 metre high tower crane that they were assembling in Frankfurt, Germany, collapsed on August 20th. Two of the men were on the jib at the time, the third was in the cab. More deaths were almost caused by the fact that the crane fell onto a works canteen - the cook saw the crane coming and got everybody out in time. Investigations are continuing.
